Pieta

Pieta by Maribeth Walton McGinley, Watercolor, 32 x 16
  • Watercolor on Paper
  • 32" x 16"

This is another one of several pieces hidden in a box for two years because, inexplicably, they appeared unworthy of my attention at the time.  Its revealed image is humbling.

In the upper right, reversed out of the blue arched shape, is the loving face of Mary.  She gazes downward at the drooped head of her crucified son which lies horizontally just beneath her, encircled with a glowing halo and surrounded by the essence of angels.

Over time, while studying this painting more carefully, another face emerged, upright and directly overlapping the lifeless head of Jesus.  Who is this ancient man?  Is this the face of the risen Christ?  Could this possibly be Joseph, and this painting represents the Holy Family?  Or perhaps this is Jacob's son, Judah, from whom the shoot of Jesse stems?
